Americans live in a more perilous world today than they did just 100+ days ago. President Trump’s decision to sign the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and begin peace talks with Iran demonstrated President Trump’s understanding that reinforcing failure makes no sense.

The MOU is encouraging, but does President Trump fully grasp that the United States has lost its war to subjugate Iran with air and naval power. Does the President realize the US Navy’s failure to wrest control of the Strait of Hormuz (SOH) back from Tehran exposed the limits of US Military (USM) power heretofore concealed from public view?

The disastrous conduct of the war rests primarily but not exclusively with the President. It was the president’s National Security advisors who failed to define an attainable political-military objective or prepare a coherent strategic design. The military and intelligence advice offered by Israeli and American advisors was deeply flawed. Pressure from the inner circle to launch another major assault on Iran must be rejected.

Fortunately, so far President Trump has stepped back for the abyss. However, the war is far from resolved and many questions linger:

  • Is the US-Israeli war against Iran at an end?

  • Can a new ceasefire hold?

  • Will the Strait of Hormuz (SOH) reopen?

  • Has the global energy crisis been averted?
